I am happy to report, on behalf of the Zoological Society, that our 1st Annual Polar Run was a success! We had a great turnout with 150 runners and walkers joining us for the early morning family fun run. Thanks to Kramp Chiropractic for providing the runners with snacks.

The Zoological Society of Manitoba was also able to announce that it has reached it’s first Ice Cap thanks in part due to the great run turnout. What is an Ice Cap? We have now raised our first $10,000 in support of the Polar Bear Conservation Fund in Tribute to Debby.

But we’re certainly not stopping here – plans are underway for our Run Wild in May, our Zoo Brew Social in June, a super special September promotion and our Boo at the Zoo event in October. Proceeds from all of these events will be directed to the PBC Fund. If you would like to make a seperate donation to the fund to help us reach our goal of 25 Ice Caps in 2009, please visit http://www.zoosociety.com/fundraising_information.asp

Run Polar Run! March 19, 2009

The Zoological Society and the Running Room are busy preparing for this Sunday’s 1st Annual Polar Run. The Society and Running Room have already hosted three successful !Run Wild! events and we decided to initiate the Polar Run to raise public awareness and funds for a new polar bear conservation centre at the zoo.

We have had a fantastic sign-up rate so far but we would like to really raise the roof on this race. Come out to the Assiniboine Park Zoo on Sunday March 22 and run, walk, jog, jump, skip or simply sally forth and be part of the movement.

The Polar Run

And remember, this is a great warm up for our May !Run Wild at the Zoo! event, so find a friend, a coworker, a family member, a neighbour or one of each and make your way over the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

Eco-Calendar Dates

Oops! I almost forgot to post this. So that I’m ahead of things for next month, I’ll also list April. These green calendar eco-dates are observed in Canada, North America and/or the world.

I hope you will take the time to learn more about them or observe them by taking action. How you might ask? Easy. On National Forestry Day you can hug at tree or plant a tree! On World Water Day you can install a low-flow shower head and reduce your shower time to save water. This helps save you money and saves our precious resources.

March 1-7 – National Tree Week

March 5-7 – World Sustainable Energy Days

March 12-20 – National Outdoor Week (UK)

March 20 – Vernal (Spring) Equinox

March 21 – World Forestry Day

March 22 – UN World Water Day

March 23 – UN World Meteorological Day

April is both Earth Month and Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month:

April 5 – 11 – National Wildlife Week

April 7 – World Health Day

April 20-26 – National Soil Conservation Week

April 22 – Earth Day

April 24 – Arbour Day

Animal Enrichment Donations

The Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Animal Enrichment Committee would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to the Portage Avenue, Dominion Centre, Main St. and Dakota PET VALU Better Pet Nutrition stores for their recent donation of toys and food for our animals. The wonderful staff at these four stores donated all the money that they earned from Halloween Pet Pictures and Pictures with Santa to the Animal Enrichment Committee.

Zoo staff sent in a wish list of items they wanted for their animals and the goodies were delivered March 12th. Over $800 was raised (!) which equated to six boxes of enrichment items, toys and food.  The keepers were very excited by the gifts and quickly cleaned out the boxes to try out the new goods with the animals.  With kong-balls for the monkeys, a ferret tent for the meerkats, stuffed animals for the lemurs, bird toys for the parrots, a watering station for the bearded dragons and perches for the birds in the Animal Hospital, everyone was happy.

So again a huge thank you to the staff and management of the Pet Valu stores – the staff and animals of the Assiniboine Park Zoo really appreciate the donations and the ongoing support. If you would like to make a donation to the Assiniboine Park Zoo for the enrichment program, please contact the Zoological Society of Manitoba. Here are a few things on the list:
