Geocaching at the Zoo III June 6, 2010

Come and spend the day at the Zoo and learn about geocaching.

Date: Saturday June 12, 2010
Time: noon – approximately 4:30 p.m.

Enter the Zoo though the South Gate and then meet us at the Zoo Education Centre located at N49° 52.122 W097° 14.515. (To your left as you go through the gate)

Noon – 12:30 p.m. Introduction to geocaching presented by the Manitoba Geocaching Association.
12:30 – 4:00 p.m. Search for the new geocaches that will be placed around the Zoo.
4:00 Prize Draw

This year’s theme for our caches is biodiversity so expect a very diverse set of caches! The MBGA will have a couple of extra GPS units available for those that are interested in participating but do not own a GPS. They will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have about geocaching or the use of your GPS.

New Zoo Geocaches Launched June 20, 2009

The Zoological Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Geocaching Association will be hosting their second annual “Geocaching the Zoo” event tomorrow, June 21, 2009. The weather forcast looks fantastic for a stroll with the family through the zoo to find our 8 new caches. Each cache is themed around the Zoo Education Centre’s current education campaign dubbed: Mission Big Foot.

All of the cache coordinates will be available at http://www.mbgeocaching.ca and http://www.geocaching.com as of tomorrow but we encourage everyone to stop by the Zoo Education Centre to meet with other geocachers, representatives of the MGCA and Zoo Society, and to enter a contest for finding locations.

Come and spend the day at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, learn about geocaching and try to find all of our 8 new zoo caches! This year’s theme is Mission: Big Foot.

Geocaching at the Zoo December 12, 2008

When I first heard about geocaching, I was a bit perplexed. My first reaction to it was that it seemed like an odd hobby. Then I realized it was actually a high tech scavenger hunt that got participants to explore their city, their parks and their province or state. Didn’t sound quite as odd anymore. In fact, it sounded like a great way for youth groups, families and schools to be active!

Lead by two very active and enthusiast Geocachers and zoo supporter, I got the Zoological Society involved, and along with the Manitoba Geocaching Association, worked to set up and launch a series of eight fun new caches throughout the Assiniboine Park Zoo. Revealed in June of 2008, these special zoo caches were themed around endangered species and their conservation. The Zoo Education Centre was thrilled to be able to get its message of conservation out to a new audience. We all saw this as a great way for families, groups and individuals to learn about animals while either being introduced to Geocaching or giving experienced cachers a chance to add eight finds to their list (assuming you find them all!)

We were thrilled but the response we had, not only at the launch but at the continued interest in the series. If you haven’t been to the Assiniboine Park Zoo to find the caches, don’t delay. We are planning on a new series for 2009 and the old group will be removed. The new group of caches will be launched in the spring.
